”VI KOM GJENNOM SKOGEN”
(WE CAME THROUGH THE WOODS)

The photographs shown here are a glimpse from the project ”Vi kom gjennom skogen” (We came through the woods). A project she has been working on for 10 years.

"My life was a huge contrast to the harmony I sensed in these country lives. I experienced that they had a lot of time and interest for me, my profession and my project. Money, luxury, competition, fashion and trends seemed to have nothing to do with their requirements for a good life."

These photos have been exhibited in Paris, London, Stockholm and Oslo. Tv coverage: Aktuelt,Tv Norge, Østnytt and Norge Rundt.

BARENTSBURG

In 2004 Benedikte Ugland started on her second huge photographic project. "For many years, I have been fascinated by the small Russian mining community of Barentsburg on Svalbard, where about 900 Russian and Ukrainians live, in an attempt to escape the misery of crisis-stricking mining areas in their home countries. On April 22, 2004 I packed my photo equipment and left for Svalbard/Norway in order to portray the population of Barentsburg.

Three years later Benedikte Ugland had many new Russian and Ukrainian acquaintances and a number of photos which ended up in a huge one man exhibition in Gallery Kontrast/Stockholm. The mining community of Barentsburg is now closed down.
